Creston Seedy Saturday 2012

I received this event poster in my email the other day. All the info about the Seedy Saturday event in Creston for 2012. As usual it is at the New Life Christian Church just east of the high school on Elm in their basement. There will be seeds to trade, pick up and to purchase. Local farmers are encouraged to bring in their products as well.

There is no charge to get in as there is no presentation this year. The college is instead offering 2 classes in seed saving one in May and the other in the fall at the college itself.

If there is any specific questions or information you want covered at the classes please send me an email. It seems it is my turn to lead this class. Brenda, Karen, Dan, Holly and others have all had a turn and with Holly moving.... Oh boy.

I've been busy laying out an outline and thinking of ways to present the materials with photos and hands on activities. Any ideas are appreciated!

Any favourite seed saving resources? I am trying to put together a good collection of handouts for participants and am going to bring all the seed saving books that I refer to. It is nice to see what is out there before purchasing anything.

Anyways ... Seedy Saturday, Creston, 2012, March 10, 1-4, New Life Christian Church, 1821 Elm Street.

See you there!

Creston Seedy Saturday 2011

In keeping with our low-carbon mandate we loaded up the bike trailer and headed off to Seedy Saturday. So much more pleasant to stroll along pushing the bike chatting with my eldest daughter than to rush off in the van, parking is easier too.

We got our two tables all set up and were thrilled to be beside Dan McMurray. He had a couple ideas for us and we traded a few seeds before the doors were open. We offered our bean seeds either loose or prepackaged. They made a very attractive display.

During the presentation on seed saving we took a break and Kait pulled out her knitting.

It was very informative to talk to the various people who attended. it was so nice to meet so many interesting people!!! We can see definite trends in what people are looking for and many ways that we can improve our offerings. Thanks for all the great ideas folks :o)

If you are attending a Seedy event as a vendor you might appreciate these ideas that I need to mark down to remember for our next event:
-our float was actually large enough, no problems with making change
-we need a better sign, time to get more official
-having enough of our seed list printed up so we could give one to everyone was great
-having two tables thinly spread out made it easier for people to browse
-having a person for each of the tables instead of only me helped too
-pack liquids! We avoid plastic and should have packed our own drinks, thankfully we were able to get tap water in real glass glasses from the coffee shop on-site
-points to us for having tape to share, paper tape ;-)
-pictures of the beans in green stage, the lettuce, and the tomatoes would help, a lot
-taste everything, make notes, be ready to share, recipes maybe

We are hard at work getting ready for Seedy Saturday day after next. Thank heavens for children who are curious and hard working :o) They find this quite interesting. Here three of them are busy picking through the beans seed by seed making sure each one is lovely. When we say our seeds are Hand Processed we really mean it.

All of the beans are being offered loose, the tomato seeds and lettuce seeds have been packaged into envelopes. All of the seeds have been germination tested and the seed list has been edited to reflect exactly what we will be offering this weekend.

We'll be busy tomorrow finishing off the beans, dusting off the display trays, and getting the last details attended to.

I can't wait for Saturday! Hope to see you there!!
